Work-life satisfaction is a critical issue for many individuals in today’s busy and fast-paced environment. To be your best, you need to learn how to make time for yourself, a task that is often easier said than done.  Information derived from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Society for Histotechnology shows that more and more people are impacted by an ever-increasing workload, competing personal responsibilities, and lack of social support structures. During this interactive and informative webinar, individuals will be able to identify the challenges they face in obtaining work-life satisfaction and provided with the tools and strategies needed which can be implemented immediately or in the future to ensure continued success in their personal and professional life.

Course Outline

  1. Introduction and review of objectives.
  2. Group discussion: What makes work-life satisfaction so challenging?
  3. Review of five key areas (incorporates questions and interactive exercises): Support system; Saying "no"; Boundaries are important; needs v. wants; time to relax.

Since 2008, Dr. Dean has focused on leadership and career enhancement strategies for organizations and individuals, based on her 27 years’ experience as a federal executive. She held senior management positions at the National Institutes of Health in grants peer review, as senior scientific advisor to three NIH Directors, and as founding/acting Director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. She has written two books that draw upon her life-long experiences: Equitable Solutions for Retaining a Robust STEM Workforce (with co-author Janet Bandows Koster) and Getting the Most out of Your Mentoring Relationships: A Handbook for Women in STEM. Raised on a tobacco farm in eastern Kentucky, Dr. Dean earned the B.A. in chemistry from Berea College, Ph.D. in biochemistry from Duke University, and conducted postdoctoral research in cell and developmental biology at Princeton University. She is an elected fellow of the AAAS, the Washington Academy of Sciences, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the Association for Women in Science. Of all the awards she has received, she is most proud of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Berea College in 2007 in recognition of her career achievements in the public sector and for her advocacy for historically underrepresented groups in science and engineering.  She is an ACS Career Consultant, former national President of the Association for Women in Science, and member of the Berea College Alumni Executive Council.

Cynthia Simpson, M.Ed., CAE is Manager, Member Services with the National Society for Histotechnology. She is an international speaker and has given over 200 presentations on a variety of topics and co-authored various publications including “Mentoring Postdoc Women from an Institutional Perspective” in the From Ph.D. to Professoriate book and “Work-Life and Childcare Resources for Postdoc Women” in the Advancing Postdoc Women Guidebook. Growing up in Seneca Falls, NY (the birthplace of women’s rights), she is a graduate of Syracuse University with a B.S. in Business Management and George Mason University with a M.Ed. in Curriculum Instruction and Design. In 2010, she earned her certified association executive credential from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). Cindy currently serves on the National Postdoctoral Association’s Advisory Council, Phi Kappa Phi’s Bylaws Committee, ASAE’s Membership Professionals Advisory Council, and is a member of the Virtual Association Network.
